Remembering Russ Hefty

I first met my friend Russ Hefty over 15 years ago through my activities with the Friends of Cherokee Marsh. Russ was the long-time Conservation Resources Supervisor for Cherokee Marsh and the City of Madison’s other conservation parks until his retirement in 2016.
I was very sad to learn of Russ’s passing in June after a long battle with cancer. Russ was a champion of the natural world, with a special love for purple martins, oak savannas, and winter adventuring by snowshoe. Russ Hefty obituary
Following retirement, Russ continued to share his knowledge by leading walks and paddle tours at Cherokee Marsh. He was the speaker at our first annual member meeting. I knew I could always count on Russ to be cheerful and optimistic and have a story (or three) to tell.

With heavy hearts, we invite you to join us in honoring the beautiful life of Russell Hefty. His love of nature and passion to restore and preserve it, touched so many. We want to celebrate and come together to share memories and pay tribute to his many contributions.

Location: The American Legion, 207 Legion St, Verona, WI 53593
Lunch will be served. Afterwards, all are welcome to join the family for a walk through Donald Park. Donald Park was one of Russ’s favorite parks. He spent countless hours donating his time and knowledge here and at his other favorite park, Cherokee Marsh.
