Friends of Cherokee Marsh and Upper Yahara Watershed

Statement about the city's revised Cherokee Special Area Plan

The Friends of Cherokee Marsh & Upper Yahara Watershed thank the City of Madison's staff and the members of its Plan Commission for the excellent work done to date on Cherokee Park Incorporated's proposed development plan.

The City's plan to acquire 24 acres in the Fifth Addition and a conservation easement around the High Hill are positive steps toward protecting the ecological functions of the Cherokee Marsh conservation area, so crucial to the future water quality of our region.

The City's planned acquisition of 234 acres of adjacent wetlands is exceptionally farsighted; we will all benefit when this area is restored to a high quality marsh. It is clear that an effort has been made to address the many environmental dimensions of this large development.

The Friends remain committed to protection of water quality and wildlife in the Upper Yahara watershed, maintaining the largest possible natural-area buffers adjacent to rivers and wetlands, including those in or near Cherokee Marsh Conservation Park.

We look forward to working with the City, the Plan Commission and the developer toward further refinement of the plan.
